For over 14 years, Atlantis Casino Resort Spa has participated in NV Energy’s energy efficiency program, designed to offer technical assistance and monetary incentives for companies who strive to reduce their carbon footprint. Atlantis has also participated in multiple speaker panels over the years to promote efficiency to peers in the industry, in addition to demonstrating a robust business strategy aligned with sustainability efforts. Atlantis has partnered with KONE to offer guests escalators that are the first of their kind in Nevada. Lubrication-free chains reduce the use of oil up to 97% compared to conventional escalators. In addition to these eco-friendly features, a UV handrail sanitizing system kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses, including COVID, SARS and MERS. Atlantis Food & Beverage Team Members no longer serve straws with beverages, though they are still available upon request. This includes plastic straws, stir sticks and cocktail sipping straws. Atlantis also recently announced it is the first building in Northern Nevada to be assessed by the Green Building Initiative (GBI), resulting in its top rating — the prestigious Four Green Globes certification. And, in an ongoing effort to increase availability of environmentally friendly products, Atlantis has installed water dispensers from Vivreau Advanced Water Systems. 2020 Winners

First Place
Great Basin Community Food Co-op
The Great Basin Community Food Co-op began when a few people got together in 2005 to create a buyers’ club, piggybacking on the natural food orders of sister businesses and relying exclusively on volunteer efforts. The club was closely associated with a cooperative CSA program that coordinated several regional farmers’ produce into one weekly basket subscription for local households, known as the Great Basin Basket. Both the buyers’ club and the Great Basin Basket grew quickly, and a small storefront opened on Wonder Street within a year. Since 2012, the Co-op has operated next to downtown Reno at 240 Court St., and has grown into a community-based business focused on promoting the local food system and serving as a sustainable cooperative model for access to wholesome food that enriches the health of the Northern Nevada’s environment and economy.
Second Place
Down to Earth Composting
Down To Earth Composting diverts household food “waste” from local landfills, with crews currently picking up hundreds of pounds of food “waste” on bicycles each week from several locations across greater Reno-Sparks. Staff adds its weekly haul to local compost piles and, after Mother Nature does her thing, the transformed food “waste” remains in the community as nutrient-rich compost, which helps urban farms, school gardens, and avid backyard gardeners grow healthy produce right here in town. All of this contributes to Down To Earth’s goal of helping sustainably manage the Truckee Meadows’ food “waste” and building a healthier, more resilient community.
